AURELIUS implements its business strategy in an ethically, socially and environmentally responsible manner. It is crucial to our long-term success that our activities are run in a responsible manner. AURELIUS respects the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact - the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative - a call to companies to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and take actions that advance societal goals.
Key focus areas of AURELIUS Corporate Responsibility are:
1. People, diversity, labour, human rights
People are the key to success – However nowadays in the world of business this is very often forgotten and people are seen as an unavoidable expense.
At AURELIUS we try to think differently. We know that our success relies on the individual performance of each and everyone in our company. It is our primary aim to support our employees in their daily business, their professional career and in achieving their personal goals.
The team of AURELIUS operates across many different industries, countries and cultures. Under such circumstances a successful interaction can only be ensured through an integrated strategy, uniting the complete team and at the same time supporting every individual’s specific strengths.
Human rights comprise fundamental rights defined by various conventions and declarations in respect of child labour, forced labour, freedom of association and collective agreements, diversity issues and gender equality. At Aurelius we fully support the principles of the UN Global Compact.
Our aim to be a "GOOD HOME" not only applies to our portfolio companies but also to our staff.
We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our products and our operations through the use of methods which are responsible and economically sound. It is our goal to minimize environmental pollution and to thus continually increase our contribution to environmental protection. As our business grows, we strive to continuously improve our performance and assess the environmental effects of our decisions.
These obligations are especially important for the three chemical subsidiaries of AURELIUS:
ISOCHEM Group (Vert-le-Petit, France)
Sustainable development is a corner stone of ISOCHEM's policy. ISOCHEM long term success relies on respect of core values like the protection of social environment and the safety and health of employees and neighbours in a strict compliance with local and international regulations. ISOCHEM uses management systems (ISO 9000, French regulatory management system for SEVESO’s sites) to integrate the new regulations related to chemical substances. We develop communication around trades and we innovate in compliance with Sustainable Development requirements. ISOCHEM is a signing member of UIC (French professional union of chemistry affiliated with CEFIC) progress commitment and plays an active part in the various UIC regulator committees. ISOCHEM is a member of the Responsible Care® program. We define objectives for continuous improvement and progress.
Policy act on Safety Health & Environment
On the basis of its health impact and chemical agents at work follow-up studies, ISOCHEM has developed an original organization in order to control, communicate and ensure the optimal protection of its personnel, its subcontractors and its environment.
From the design of a manufacturing process or working tool to its development, a team dedicated to «Process safety» and «Hazard studies» instructs each phase in order to ensure systematically the safety of goods and people. Safety being everyone’s concern: Prevention, Training, Auditing, Control and Experience Return are key elements in the success of our approach. Therefore, ISOCHEM ensures the permanence of a safety excellence level.
An experienced HS&E team ensures a permanent regulatory watch, allowing ISOCHEM to anticipate and manage in the best possible way the regulatory obligations such as REACH, the GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) or any other new regulation, related for instance to occupational exposures and transports. Going one step beyond the writing and updating of the SDS (safety data sheets), ISOCHEM provides advices for the state-of-the-art use of products: ISOCHEM shares its expertise with You.
Through UIC’s progress agreement, Responsible Care® program, and basing itself on BAT’s (Best Available Technics), ISOCHEM strives to systematically reduce the impact of chemicals on water, air and soil. For instance, ISOCHEM integrates in process implementation the reduction of waste from the onset, systematically seeking creative solutions to give this waste a second life. ISOCHEM received an award at the 2014’s Challenge for “Responsible chemistry” of Union the French Chemical Industry (UIC).
CALACHEM (Grangemouth, Scotland)
CALACHEM strives for sustainable development in strict compliance with local and international regulations. The protection of our social environment and the safety and health of employees and neighbours are important elements of CALACHEM's policy.
CALACHEM is a member of the British CIA (Chemicals Industry Association) and takes part in the Responsible Care® program. We are certified to accredited standards (BSI 14001) and we are engaged with the local community, elected officials and community groups.
CALACHEM focuses on continuously reducing energy consumption, waste and costs to ensure a more efficient process. The Management Director is responsible to the board on all SH&E matters. Dedicated SH&E comittees and representatives meet regularly.
Briar Chemicals (Norwich, UK)
Briar Chemicals recognises that it is vitally important to all our stakeholders that our site is operated in a safe and responsible manner, providing employment opportunities, and contributing to the UK and global economies through the manufacture of chemical products that benefit society.
The majority of our customers are leaders in their industry sector. The products we make on their behalf help to protect a wide range of crops, increase farmers’ yields in challenging climates, prevent diseases in cattle and sheep, and are key building blocks in the leather, textile and plastics sectors. We operate an Upper Tier COMAH establishment where our SHEQ philosophy forms an integral part of our business and is demonstrated through our commitment to:
- Maintaining the health and safety of all
- Minimising our impact on the environment
- Ensuring we do nothing to disturb, disrupt or annoy our neighbours
- Satisfying our customers’ needs
We strictly adhere to international quality and environmental management standards including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. As an independently operated business we remain committed to building strong community relations through a comprehensive external communications programme. Briar Chemical’s factsheet for schools is attached. Briar Chemicals is a member of the Chemical Industries Association and EFCG (CEFIC), and adheres to the guiding principles of Responsible Care ®.
3. Social Engagement
3.1 Support of dedicated social projects
As entrepreneurs, we experience how our actions directly and indirectly affect the social lives of many people every day. Each decision releases an impulse, the effects of which radiate outward like the waves caused by a stone tossed into the water. Unfortunately, in business, the results are not uniform. What can have a positive effect on one person can cause a serious problem for another. Ultimately, we can only be conscious of our responsibility and weigh our actions to the best of our knowledge and belief in this regard.
Based on this awareness, we are particularly concerned about fulfilling our social responsibilities – both privately and in the name of the AURELIUS Group. Years ago, the AURELIUS Group initiated a campaign to collect funds for important social projects at Christmas time. AURELIUS doubles the amounts collected by its employees. Every year there is a substantial sum with which we can help people.
3.2 AURELIUS Refugee Initiative e.V. - AURELIUS employees campaign for refugees
On October 1, 2015, the employees and Executive Board of AURELIUS laid the foundation for a long-term aid program for refugees with a symbolic action. A minibus full of toys collected by the employees was handed over in collaboration with Flüchtlingshilfe München in the main refugee processing facility at Bayernkaserne, Munich. "We are aware that toys do not save lives. But if we can contribute to easing the often difficult fate of refugees with this and further actions in the future, then we have already accomplished something", says Dr. Dirk Markus, Chief Executive Officer of AURELIUS. The toys were donated by employees of the AURELIUS Group and doubled by the Executive Board.
